Through photography, film, interviews, documents and environmental data, the project examines how the steelworks is connected to the surrounding region and the people who live and work there.
Black Snow brings together the experiences of workers, former employees, residents, scientists, campaigners, regulators and others whose lives are connected to the steel industry. At its centre is a place where employment and industrial pride exist alongside pollution, concerns about health and difficult questions about responsibility.
The project was exhibited at Verwey Museum Haarlem in 2026, curated by Claire Hoogakker. A book, designed by Mainstudio, will be published by Lecturis in October 2026.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Harm van de Poel (1984) is a Dutch photographer and filmmaker based in Haarlem.
Through long-term documentary projects, he examines the relationship between people, industry and landscape. His practice combines analog and digital portraiture and landscape photography with film, interviews, documents and research.
Van de Poel graduated with distinction from Fotoacademie Amsterdam in 2017.
